Weaving Community
Inspired by the living room theatre/ concert movement where small venues create an intimate setting for high quality performances in your local community, we bring professional performers to us. We can have a great night out, stretch our minds and hearts through the arts and when it's in our own town, all without getting in a car. Not having a large enough living room, this means making good use of local community centres and halls. These events are arranged on a not for profit basis and aim to provide the artists with a reasonable fee. As they are in small venues it's a balancing act to cover the basic costs and this is often done by requesting people make good use of the bar, and if willing and able, give a further donation of time or money on top of the ticket price. Help with advertising, set up, cleaning and tidying up after are much appreciated. This year's performance is coming up:
After the success of last year’s performance, Living Room Theatre is returning to North Tawton on 07 November 2026 to perform The Uncertainty Principle, written by award winning Playwright Simon Stephens (best known for the play adaptation of Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime). Simon says:
"We're living in uncertain times, anxious times… ‘it might be the start of the most remarkable adventure’. If you don't know what's going to happen in your life, that's not necessarily a bad thing. To be alive, to be human, is empowered by our alertness to the unpredictable.”
Philip Robinson (The End is in the Beginning, Every Brilliant Thing, All is Mended) is performing with Rose Reynolds (RSC, Netflix, BBC). As with last year, it looks like we're in for a fantastic evening and we encourage people to stay after and have a drink with Rose and Philip.
We want to make the event as accessible as possible and priced to tempt those who might not think of themselves as theatre goers to give it a go. The play is 80 minutes long with no interval; it has frequent swearing and some sexual references and is suitable for over 15’s. There is strobe lighting for the first two minutes, please alert the organisers before or on the night if you need assistance to manage this. This year the performance is at North Tawton Rugby Club which is fully accessible and has plenty of parking; please leave spaces near the entrance for those with limited mobility.

On a wet and windy December night in Devon, my husband and I were invited into the world of Samuel Beckett through a masterful production that I would have never believed possible in such an intimate venue. It was a privilege to be so close to such talent and I defy anyone to find a more exciting, provoking and moving piece of theatre anywhere. Long may events like this live!
To witness such a high quality piece of theatre in a small community centre is an extraordinary pleasure and privilege. It was both entertaining and inspirational throughout. I was, as the saying goes, "blown away".
How amazing to have this opportunity right on our doorstep in North Tawton! Not only did most of us meet new local people there, this shared immersive experience of Beckett’s brilliant creativity has somehow woven us together, so that, since then, the show has generated discussion and connection wherever we happen to meet.
